MICHELLE THONG MEI YIN

​Before receiving the scholarship, I was an ordinary student who loved solving problems and taking on new challenges. I’ve always believed in stepping out of my comfort zone to grow, and I was motivated to ease my parents’ financial burden. To me, the scholarship was more than financial support. It was a chance to prove that I could rise to any challenge and become the person I aspired to be.

When I received the news, I was on cloud nine. It felt surreal yet deeply motivating. The scholarship strengthened my belief that hard work pays off and gave me the confidence to strive for excellence. It provided a platform to maximise my potential and opened a door to endless opportunities, encouraging me to speak up, lead, and take on roles with greater purpose.

One of my proudest achievements has been balancing leadership roles in three clubs while maintaining strong academic performance. This journey allowed me to experience a fulfilling university life—organising events, meeting inspiring peers, joining competitions and hackathons, and building meaningful connections. Through these experiences, I grew in leadership, adaptability, and communication, and becoming a five-time podium winner remains one of my fondest accomplishments, reminding me to embrace every learning opportunity.

 

As President of Sunway Actuarial & Financial Excellence (SAFE), I had the privilege of leading a dedicated team and witnessing their growth. Seeing the positive impact we created within the actuarial community was truly fulfilling. My passion for giving back continued as a Career Peer Advisor, where I guided students through résumé and LinkedIn reviews and mock interviews. Helping others gain confidence in their professional journey was incredibly rewarding. Later, I served as the Vice President of Operations for the Malaysian Actuarial Students Association (MASA), contributing to a national student community. Knowing that my efforts supported and inspired others is something I carry with pride.
